6 people sentenced to death in 6 months, strict action taken against rape convicts in this state

No death sentence was awarded in the case of the suspected rape and murder of RG Kar and a 14-year-old Class VIII student.

Various courts in West bengal have awarded death sentences to six convicts in the last six months in cases of rape and murder of minor girls, but Sanjay Roy's name is not included in these. Sanjay Roy is guilty of raping and murdering a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. After the RG Kar rape-murder case, people across the country expressed anger and medical staff protested in various hospitals including RG Kar for several months.

A man convicted of killing his family members was also awarded the death penalty, taking the number of death penalty awarded in the state in the last six months to seven.

Six of these seven death penalty cases were classified as the rarest of rare cases of rape and murder of girls. The accused were booked under the indian Penal Code (IPC) and later under the indian Penal Code (BNS) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The name of Sanjay Roy, convicted in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, is not included in this list, as a kolkata court did not award the death penalty to the convict for the heinous murder of a trainee female doctor on duty after raping her on august 9, 2023. The court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment.

Apart from this, the case of suspected rape and murder of a 14-year-old class eight student is also not included in this. The mutilated body of the teenager was found in Kolkata's New Town area on february 7 this year. The police have arrested a 22-year-old e-rickshaw driver in this case.

The last judicial hanging in West bengal took place two decades ago. dhananjay Chatterjee, a security guard at a residential building in south kolkata, was hanged in Alipore jail just before august 15, 2004, for the rape and murder of a 16-year-old student. The crime was committed in march 1990.

The death sentences in these heinous crime cases were awarded between september 2024 and february 2025. A POCSO court in Siliguri, West Bengal awarded the death penalty to Mohammad abbas on september 7, 2023. He was found guilty of raping and murdering a 16-year-old school-going girl in Matigara area in august 2023.

The ruling trinamool congress (TMC) welcomed the decision and wrote on its social media platform X, 'This swift punishment is a testimony to the efforts of West bengal police which ensured justice within a year. With the implementation of the aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, such harsh punishments will set an example, instill fear in criminals, and prevent such heinous crimes.'
