
'Implement Railway Act, Section 57 should be followed completely', high court seeks reply in stampede case at New delhi station.
New delhi Stampede Case: A bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the concerned authorities to submit details of their measures on these issues in their affidavit.

The delhi high court heard the case of the death of people in the stampede at New delhi Railway Station on wednesday (February 19, 2025). The court has sought a reply from the indian Railways. The high court asked the high-ranking officials of the Railway Board to consider how such incidents can be prevented. Also, the court asked to implement the Railway Act in full spirit. Now the next hearing of this case will be on march 26.
The petitioner in the delhi high court said that the railways should be ordered to implement the rules made to prevent overcrowding in stations and railway coaches as per the railway rules. The petitioner also said that this is about the lives of citizens, and Section 57 of the Railway Act should be fully implemented. The petitioner said that the indian Railways does not have any system to assess how many people are at the station.
What did the court order
A bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the concerned authorities to present details of their measures on these issues in their affidavit. The court ordered, 'The issues raised in the petition should be investigated at a high level in the Railway Board and after that, an affidavit should be filed by the respondent giving details of the decisions that can be taken by the Railway Board.'
What did the central government say
On the matter, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the matter has not been taken up in an adversarial manner and the Railways is bound to follow the law. The Center said that the Railways will look into the issues. The Center further said that this is an unfortunate incident, and the loss of life cannot be compensated by compensation. He will file an affidavit in the delhi high court regarding this entire matter.
A PIL was also filed in the supreme court on february 17 in the matter. 18 people lost their lives and 15 were injured in this incident. The petition has been filed demanding immediate action to prevent such disasters in the future.
