china has once again warned of a new COVID-19 strain that has been found in the nation, four years after the world saw the deadliest COVID-19 pandemic brought on by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Reports state that Chinese researchers have discovered HKU5-CoV-2, a novel bat coronavirus that might start a new pandemic.

Health professionals are paying close attention since studies have shown that the recently identified strain can target the same human cell receptor (ACE2) that COVID-19 utilized to propagate. A group lead by Shi Zhengli, renowned as "batwoman" for her research on bat viruses, discovered the finding. Scientists from prestigious research institutes, including the wuhan Institute of Virology, participated in the study, which was published in the journal Cell.

The MERS virus is a member of the merbecovirus family, which also contains HKU5-CoV-2. Initially discovered in hong kong bats, it has since been discovered to be a novel strain capable of adhering to human cells. Additionally, the virus may attach itself to different animal cells, which increases the likelihood that it will spread from one species to another. According to the South china Morning Post, experts claim that it has a far lower capacity to infect people than COVID-19.
