A discussion has been sparked by the reemergence of an old video on X featuring Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni talking about how islam can coexist with european ideals. Meloni raised worries about foreign sponsorship of Italian religious organizations in the video and said that Islamic culture is "distant" from european values.

"I believe that there is a problem of compatibility between Islamic culture and the values and rights of our civilization," Meloni is heard saying in the video.  She further asserts that Saudi Arabia, which upholds Sharia law, provides funds to Islamic cultural institutes throughout Italy. The video was taken in 2018 before she was appointed Italy's prime minister.

According to many media reports, the same footage had previously appeared in december 2023 during a political rally in Rome hosted by Meloni's far-right Brothers of italy group.

According to Hindustan Times, the gathering, which was attended by prominent figures including former british prime minister Rishi Sunak, was centered on european migration and refugee policy.

He issued a warning, saying that certain "enemies" were purposefully "driving people to our shores to try and destabilize our societies."

"The numbers will only rise if this problem is not resolved.  It will overwhelm our nations and our capacity to serve those who are most in need," Rishi Sunak stated.  He said, "If that means we need to update our laws and initiate an international discussion on revising the post-war asylum frameworks, then we must do so."

Elon Musk also made a rare appearance at the yearly event in 2023, meeting with a global leader  "Immigration alone is not enough to counter population decline," Musk said.  "Cultural preservation is important; we don't want Italy's uniqueness to go.  "It's critical to preserve a reasonable cultural identity, or else these nations will lose their identity," he continued.

Despite being old, the video's online distribution has rekindled discussions regarding Meloni's views on immigration and islam in Europe.
