The heroic exploits of the legendary maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj are recounted in Chhaava. In the most recent bollywood film, vicky kaushal performed the character. Many historical facets of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's life and times have sparked interest as the film continues to do well at the box office. One of these is Dharmaveergad, formerly Bahadurgad, a tiny maharashtra town close to Pune, where aurangzeb executed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj after 40 days of torture with his confidante Kavi Kalash.

The background of Dharmaveergad

One important Mughal camp was Bahadurgad.  The Mughal viceroy to the Deccan, Bahadur Khan Kokaltash, is credited with building it.  It was also known as Dharmaveer Gad and Pedgaon Cha Killa.

When aurangzeb and his troops seized Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at Sangameshwar in 1689, he was taken as a prisoner to Bahadurgad.  When Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Kavi Kalash refused to convert to Islam, they endured horrifying torture for more than 40 days.  In honor of Sambhaji Maharaj, Bahadurgad was subsequently changed to Dharmaveergad.

Today, a place of worship stands where the maratha king was bound and imprisoned.  It is also the location where aurangzeb tortured the maratha soldiers.  The precise location where the brave Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was brutally attacked is marked with a shiva ling. According to legend, aurangzeb destroyed every temple in this region, leaving just the remains remaining.

The horrifying suffering that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj had to face

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was hauled in thick iron chains upon his arrest.  He endured unspeakable atrocities and humiliation.  Aurangzeb is claimed to have torn off Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's tongue and gouged out his eyes.  They also hacked off his fingers and nails.
