Employees of the US government who are already coping with the chaos brought on by Donald Trump's comeback are now experiencing further difficulties.  Elon Musk, the affluent entrepreneur who intends to drastically cut the federal budget, needs to hear their explanations of their roles.  By 11:59 p.m. Eastern time, Musk has requested that government employees provide him with a synopsis of their responsibilities.  Disagreements have arisen within Trump's team over this proposal.  Several organizations, like the Federal Communications Commission and the Drug Enforcement Administration, have told their staff to follow Musk's instructions.

Defense, Homeland Security, Education, Commerce, and Energy, among other departments, have cautioned their employees from reacting.  After first telling its staff to comply, the Department of health and Human services halted and said it was considering how best to respond to Musk's odd directive.  Employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also received Musk's email, even though they had already been instructed to cease operations.  Musk has issued a social media warning to government workers to cooperate, threatening to terminate their employment if they don't.

This week, those who did not go back to work following Trump's order last month will be put on leave.  In the 2.3 million-person civil service, which comprises occupations ranging from park rangers to bank regulators, Musk, the richest man in the world, has been laying off over 20,000 federal employees and offered buyouts to 75,000 more.  On occasion, the government has hurried to rehire employees in vital positions, including managing nuclear weapons and addressing epidemics of avian flu.  Numerous lawsuits, including ones brought by labor organizations, have resulted from these employment layoffs.

Late on Sunday, the trump administration said that it would lay off 1,600 workers at the U.S. Agency for international Development and put almost all of the remaining personnel on leave.  Additionally, trump has stopped nearly all of the agency's activities and financing, which has caused havoc for international aid initiatives.  Many individuals who formerly thought their employment was safe are now concerned about their financial stability as a result of the mass firings.  Charles Farinella, a former IRS agent in New York, said he was unclear whether he still had health insurance via his employer and was thinking of canceling an appointment with a dentist.

He said, feeling stressed, "I don't know what to do next and might have to sell my house because I didn't get any severance." government contractors are laying off workers and delaying vendor payments as a result of Musk's massive employment layoffs, which are also affecting the larger US economy.  For instance, Chemonics, a USAID-affiliated firm, recently disclosed in court filings that it was forced to temporarily fire 750 workers, or more than half of its workforce.

Musk seems to like the chaos; at a recent political gathering, he even brandished a chainsaw.  The CEO of X and tesla wants to reduce the government's $6.7 trillion budget by $1 trillion.  Musk intends to examine such programs for fraudulent expenditure, but trump wants to preserve popular health and retirement programs, which restricts the cuts.  Eliminating fraud and waste in Social Security and Medicare might lead to increased benefits and improved healthcare for citizens, he wrote on X.

According to a government monitor, fraud and mistakes might cost up to $521 billion a year, or almost 8% of all expenses from the previous year.  Although Democrats claim that these budget cutbacks weaken the power of Congress, they have mostly failed to stop them.  Republicans in Congress, meantime, are in favor of the cutbacks and are preparing significant tax cuts.  Nonetheless, some Republican politicians have come under fire from their own voters who think Musk is going too far with his actions.
