In preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, which is customarily connected with charitable giving and volunteer work among Muslims, a group of young Kashmiri women started a campaign to distribute Quran copies and hijabs to the general population, including women and children.

However, the cops stopped the show and took three group members into custody.  The precise reasons for the women's incarceration are still unknown, but they were finally freed after being questioned and the subject of an investigation.

The episode caused a great deal of debate and indignation among the public and political leaders.  The head of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and Pulwama member of the Legislative assembly (MLA), Waheed Para, denounced the police's conduct and referred to the imprisonment as unfair.  Para blasted the police for holding the ladies in custody in a string of posts on the social networking site X, pointing out that the Quran upholds the values of justice, peace, and a society free from crime.

He underlined that the women's gesture was in keeping with the Ramadan spirit of charity and asked the srinagar police not to take any legal action against them.

Para assured the srinagar police that the women were secure and that their incarceration had been shot after they were released.  He clarified that throughout the women's dissemination of the Quran, the police had expressed worries about their identities.  Reports state that the police investigated the situation before releasing the women who had been arrested.

This incident occurred soon after a significant police operation in srinagar, where more than 600 religious texts were seized by the government on suspicion of being associated with the ideology of the Jamaat-e-Islami group.

According to the authorities, these documents were illegal, and anyone discovered in possession of them received severe warnings from the police.
