On Monday, prime minister Narendra Modi emphasized the value of fox nuts, or makhana, and urged their production to be expanded globally.

In Bhagalpur, bihar, he was greeted and congratulated with a huge garland made of fox nuts. The 19th installment of the state's PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) program was released during the ceremony. The prime minister described makhana as a superfood and said that he eats it "at least 300 out of 365 days a year" because of its many health advantages. Eighty percent of India's fox nut supply comes from bihar, the state's top grower. However, the state has found it difficult to meet the rising demand for this superfood throughout the world.

As a remedy, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed plans for a special Makhana Board in bihar during the Union Budget presentation in february 2025. This board will assist in the production, processing, and marketing of makhana (fox nuts), a well-known indian superfood that has been receiving a lot of attention lately.  Through improved processing methods, chances for value addition, and access to trade-related technology, the board aims to give farmers comprehensive all-around support while making sure they take advantage of pertinent government programs.

What is Makhana?
Makhana is prepared from the seeds of the Prickly Water Lily, an aquatic plant formally known as Euryale ferox Salisbury, not puffed lotus seeds, as most packs claim.  These seeds are manually collected from the bottom of ponds or shallow fields to form the snack we know as makhana. This labor-intensive procedure makes producing makhana in large quantities a challenging task.

Makhana's health Benefits and Reasons for Being a Superfood

The prime minister includes makhana in his daily diet since it has become well-known as a nutritious powerhouse.  These are some of this bihar specialty's amazing health advantages.

Rich in nutrients and low in calories

Despite having very few calories, makhana is high in vital proteins, carbs, fiber, and minerals.  Because of this, it's the perfect snack for anyone watching their weight without sacrificing their nutritional intake.

A Superb protein Source

Makhana, which contains all of the necessary amino acids required for healthy body processes, provides vegetarians and vegans with a beneficial plant-based protein source.

Packed with antioxidants

Strong antioxidants included in these fox nuts aid in the body's fight against free radicals, which may lower the risk of several chronic illnesses and promote cellular health in general.

Suitable for Diabetics

Because makhana has a low glycaemic index, it has little effect on blood sugar levels, making it a suitable snack for people with diabetes or those who are at risk.

Properties that Reduce Inflammation

Inflammatory disorders may be lessened by the chemicals in makhana, which have been connected to decreased inflammation in the body.

Promotes Digestive health

Its high fiber content encourages gut health, prevents constipation, and supports a healthy digestive system.
