After neighbors objected to the pay rise, a Reddit user disclosed that his residential society had rescinded its plan to raise the watchman's pay. The Reddit user disclosed in a post on the "Mumbai" subreddit that his society had raised the watchman's monthly wage from ₹12,000 to ₹16,000, but was compelled to reverse this decision in response to protests from other societies.

India Herald has not independently confirmed that this information is accurate.

The mumbai resident said in his Reddit post that his community had raised the watchman's monthly pay from ₹12,000 to ₹16,000.

"My society increased watchman's salary and were then pressurized to take it back," he stated.

The decision to raise the watchman's pay was made during a recent society meeting, the Redditor clarified.  The watchman, who was pleased with the hike, shared it with other watchmen in the area.

Residents protested after the other watchmen requested pay increases from their organizations.

"How can a person survive in a mere 12000 monthly salary in Mumbai?" another person questioned.

The post also reached X, where the decision to cancel the salary hike was widely panned.

"These things just break my heart. The 'gated societies' culture somehow brings the worst out of people in this country," said one X user.

"The state of India. One building society increased watchman's salary. Other nearby buildings forced them to roll it back," another said.
