Neighbouring country of india included in FATF's grey list?
Neighbouring country nepal has been put in the grey list of financial action task force (FATF). One of the reasons behind this is its proximity with china and misuse of its money. Apart from this, nepal was also not able to give any satisfactory answer to FATF's questions. News18's report quoted a top intelligence source as saying, 'This could be a step taken by the West to stop Nepal's inclination towards China. The West believes that nepal is becoming a colony of China. There are many unknown companies and institutions which are sending money from nepal to unknown places.' Sources also said, "Western countries are upset that the people who suffered during the insurgency could not be rehabilitated due to the pressure of opposition leader Prachanda.'
Why was nepal put on the grey list?
According to sources, two things can be responsible for the mess in the grey list, first, illegal funding and second, Maoist rebellion. He said, 'China is giving loans and grants to Nepal. Loans have to be returned but grants do not have to be returned. This is the reason why Nepal's leaders are using it as per their wish. Western countries fear that after the grant, the people of nepal may not go against china, this is the reason for increasing pressure.'
While both America and china are trying to make a strong foothold in nepal, Chinese investment is very high. Sources said, 'USAID has already been stopped and after this the IMF will become strict.'
China is making moves to weaken India
China's expansionism is a matter of concern for everyone. China's increasing activity in nepal is being seen as its strategy to weaken India's regional dominance. Earlier, Tibetan refugees fleeing china would enter nepal and nepal would hand them over to india after investigation but now they are sent back to china, where they are arrested. Last year, only one refugee was able to enter India.
China considers nepal important for the security of its restive tibet autonomous region. Strong ties with Kathmandu help beijing keep an eye on Tibetan exiles and suppress their activities. Sources said nepal also wants Chinese investment to overcome its infrastructure shortage and diversify partnerships apart from India.
