Because it is steamed, idli is regarded as a highly healthful dish.  However, using plastic sheets to make idli while steaming might result in deadly illnesses like cancer. The karnataka government recently took strong action against establishments that used plastic sheets to make idli.  When idli is cooked at high temperatures using plastic sheets, toxic compounds are emitted that have been linked to major health issues, including cancer.

Testing revealed that samples of idli prepared with plastic sheets were inedible.  Additionally, it was discovered that these idli contain chemicals that might cause cancer. Toxic substances may be combined with food when idli is prepared with plastic sheets.  Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and other endocrine disruptors are included in a lot of plastic sheets.  When heated, they enter the meal.  Over time, they build up in the body and raise the chance of developing cancer.  It raises the risk of both prostate and breast cancer.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, the karnataka health Minister, was also prominent in the affair.  According to health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, 52 of the 251 hotels were discovered to be utilizing plastic. Rao said that many hotels have recently begun using plastic to cook idlis instead of traditional cloth.
