Actually, Sri Lanka has released 14 indian fishermen who were recently arrested from jail and sent them to India.
Reached chennai airport on Monday
14 fishermen, released from Sri Lankan jail, reached chennai airport on Monday. 12 fishermen from Rameswaram and Thangachimadam areas of Ramanathapuram district were fishing in the sea near kachi Island on the night of 7 February, when the Sri Lankan Navy reached the area and arrested all 12 fishermen.
Sri Lankan Navy's claim
The Sri Lankan Navy had claimed that they were crossing the border and fishing in Sri Lankan territory, due to which they were arrested.
Along with this, on december 23 last year, many fishermen who were fishing in the sea were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the border. After the arrest, they were produced in Kilinochchi court and sent to jail. After getting information about this, talks took place between the central and state governments, then after talks with the Sri Lankan government, 14 fishermen were released from Sri Lankan jail.
The 14 released fishermen were handed over to the indian Embassy in Colombo. After conducting their medical examination, the officials of the indian Embassy issued emergency passports and sent them by plane from Sri Lanka's capital Colombo to chennai Airport. The 14 fishermen who arrived at chennai Airport completed all the checks at chennai Airport, including citizenship check and custom check, and then came out.
