On monday night, kannada actress Ranya Rao was taken into custody at Kempegowda international Airport in Bengaluru when it was discovered that she had 14.8 kg of gold. After Ranya Rao was brought before a court for economic offenses, she was placed under judicial imprisonment for 14 days.

Who is Ranya Rao?

Ranya Rao has acted in a few more South indian films in addition to her well-known role alongside kannada actor sudeep in "Maanikya" (2014).

Police are looking into whether she was a part of a bigger smuggling network between dubai and India, or if she was acting alone.  The actress reportedly caught the attention of the authorities after making four trips to dubai in 15 days.  When she returned on monday, the frequency sparked curiosity and led to a focused operation.

The 33-year-old Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of K. Ramachandra Rao, a senior karnataka IPS officer.  At the karnataka State police Housing Corporation, he holds the position of Director-General of police (DGP).

Events that culminated in Ranya Rao's apprehension

The officials cited in the PTI report stated that Ranya Rao had taken an Emirates flight from dubai to Bengaluru, landing at Kempegowda international Airport.  Her frequent international travel had put her under scrutiny.

After discovering that she had visited dubai four times in 15 days, police were suspicious and launched a targeted investigation when she returned.

According to preliminary findings, Rao might have tried to get around customs inspections by using her contacts. According to the PTI story, she allegedly contacted local police officers to arrange for an escort home after landing and claimed to be the daughter of the director general of police in Karnataka.

According to investigators, she had reportedly smuggled the money by hiding gold bars in her clothing and wearing a large amount of it.

Investigators are currently trying to determine if any law enforcement personnel, including her IPS relative, knew about her activities or were duped into helping her.  Rao was transferred to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru's HBR Layout for interrogation following her detention.
