As per the most recent media poll, indians devote a substantial amount of their day to socializing and leisure. Men spend 20.3% of their time on these activities, while women follow suit, spending 19.1%.  A significant portion of this time is spent on social media, particularly endlessly scrolling through short films and reels, which frequently results in doomscrolling, as Gen Z calls it.  This is the practice of ingesting content for extended periods of time without thinking.

Sites like Moj, YouTube Shorts, and instagram Reels have become standard pastimes.  Users are frequently distracted by the endless scrolling feature and lose track of time.  What begins as a little respite becomes into an involuntary habit that impairs concentration and production.  Men who have more free time are more likely to play video games, participate in online forums, and use social media for extended periods of time.  Women are similarly sucked into the scrolling cycle when using social media, even if they have less free time.

Indians who live in cities tend to spend a little more time socializing than those who live in rural regions because they have better access to the internet.  Digital use is gradually rising, even if traditional modes of interaction are still used in rural communities.  Social networking is a stress relief for many people.

However, excessive use is turning into a significant time waster that diminishes productive tasks and meaningful contacts.  Doomscrolling has been linked in studies to mental exhaustion, addiction, and shorter attention spans.  The absence of work-leisure balance may be the cause.  After a long day, someone may want to distract himself or lose focus by watching reels that act as a sort of fast lunch for hungry people.  However, there are serious repercussions for intake, just like with fast food.
