On Wednesday, US President donald trump thanked the Pakistani government for helping to apprehend a key terrorist connected to the Kabul airport explosion in 2021.

In his speech to a joint session of Congress, trump stated, "A [Daesh] terrorist killed 13 American service members and countless others in the Abbey Gate bombing three and a half years ago."  "I'm happy to report that we have just captured the main terrorist who carried out that tragedy tonight.  And he is currently en route to confront the harsh blade of American justice.

13 American servicemen and some 170 Afghan civilians were killed in the august 2021 incident, which took place during the tumultuous US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Trump Thanks Pakistan
When the suspect's capture was announced, trump specifically acknowledged Pakistan's involvement in the operation.  He referred to it as "a very huge day for the affected families" and said, "I want to especially thank the Pakistani government for helping to arrest this monster."

For the 13 families whose children were murdered—I actually got to know them quite well—this was a very significant day.  What a bad day," he continued.

The trump administration has approved $397 million for pakistan to maintain its fleet of F-16 fighter jets, marking a dramatic change in policy.  The money will only be used for counterterrorism activities under a U.S.-monitored scheme to make sure it isn't used against india, according to a Reuters story.

This move is in spite of Trump's earlier vow to halt foreign aid when he took office on january 20.  Pakistan's allocation is one of 243 exceptions to the US's about $5.3 billion in security-related waivers, even though an executive order stopped foreign funding.

Over the years, Trump's position on Pakistan's security assistance has changed.  Citing inadequate counterterrorism measures, he reduced military aid during his first term in 2018.  In september 2022, the Biden administration approved $450 million to maintain Pakistan's F-16 aircraft, resuming support.
