On the first day of Ramadan, which started on Saturday, march 1, seventeen South Koreans converted to islam at the Seoul Central Mosque.

The Korea Muslim Federation (KMF) posted a video on facebook that shows a preacher leading a group of men and women as they recite passages from the Holy Quran before saying the Shahadah, or Islamic statement of faith.  Their conversion comes after they successfully finished the february Islamic basic education course.

Growing interest in islam in South Korea
Although south korea is still mostly a secular and Buddhist nation, there has been a steady increase in interest in islam, especially among young people.  The estimated number of Muslims in south korea, including both foreign and native-born citizens, is 200,000.

Due to exposure to the faith through travel, social media, and contacts with Muslim communities, the number of South Koreans converting to islam has grown in recent years.

By providing monthly educational sessions for individuals who are eager to learn about islam, the Korea Muslim Federation plays a significant role in promoting this enthusiasm.  For individuals who decide to convert, these courses offer a structured introduction to the faith that ends with a formal acceptance.

The well-known musician and YouTuber Daud Kim (previously Jay Kim) is among the most well-known South Koreans to embrace Islam.  Since his conversion in 2019, he has talked about his experiences as a Muslim in south korea and shared his story with his fans.

Other notable figures from around the world who have accepted islam include:

• Andrew Tate – former kickboxer and social media personality
•  mike tyson – boxing legend
•  Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) – british singer-songwriter.
