Even indians living in the US with Green Cards are feeling unsafe due to the current immigration crackdown.  Claims that US green card holders are being made to sign off on their entry into the nation at the airport are all over social media.  According to some, H-1B holders who were deported upon arrival are also in danger.  What, however, is the reality of these assertions?

Although officials have the right to question NRIs who return to the country, particularly if they have been abroad for more than a year, no one has ever been deported.  You may be requested to sign a document relinquishing your green card in such circumstances, but you are under no obligation to do so.  It is advisable to hire a lawyer and defend yourself instead.

Additionally, you must file for an i-131 (re-entry permit) before departing the united states if you intend to remain abroad for longer than six months.  This is a standard procedure that existed long before President trump took office.  Stricter regulations may apply, and you may be required to present additional documentation at the airport.  However, unless you have committed visa fraud or any other unlawful behavior, no one can deport you if you have the proper documentation.  People are spreading panic and false information among already stressed-out populations.  Thus, be mindful and understand your rights.
