Akshay Kumar recently made a statement that garnered attention: "I want to be the sun, not a star."  It asked if Shah Rukh Khan, who has been calling himself "the last of the stars," was being subtly mocked.  In contrast to SRK's recent success with the back-to-back blockbusters Jawan and Pathaan, Akshay's recent releases have not been as successful commercially, with a couple barely making over Rs 5 crore on opening days.

It's possible that Akshay's usage of the star and sun example demonstrates his desire to be a consistent, long-term presence in the industry rather than a fly-by-night.  Others have interpreted it as a sign of insecurity given SRK's steady box office performance.  In any event, Akshay's ability to adapt to shifting bollywood trends and reinvent himself continues to amaze.

Regardless of whether the statement was made at SRK's cost or not, it illustrates how the industry is evolving.  In their separate ways, these two actors are navigating this new landscape as content-based films and over-the-top (OTT) services challenge the notion of what it means to be a star.  Ultimately, rather than insulting someone, Akshay's statement seems to be more about what he wants to achieve for himself.  It is but another phase in Bollywood's dynamic landscape.
