Senior tamil Nadu minister Durai Murugan claimed that having numerous marriages was part of North indian culture and threatened to have anyone who insulted tamil have their "tongues cut off" on Thursday, further widening the gulf between the North and South.

The comments are made during a language war that is intensifying hostility between tamil Nadu and the Center as a result of the projected delimitation exercise.

Speaking at a public event, Murugan, who is renowned for his spontaneous statements, claimed that North indian traditions support polygamy and polyarchy, in contrast to tamil practices.

The minister claimed that "one woman can marry five or ten men" in North indian tradition, drawing comparisons to the Mahabharata. It is believed that the statement alludes to Draupadi's union with the five Pandavas in the Mahabharata.

"In our society, one guy marries one woman.  One lady can, however, marry five or ten males in North India.  One lady can be married by five men.  They have this culture.  "There will be another if one leaves," Murugan remarked.

Delimitation is at the heart of the dispute, as tamil Nadu fears losing its parliamentary representation if the exercise is conducted using the most recent population figures.

"We were asked to manage the population by congress and whoever was in charge at the Center.  Since we took this action, the population has decreased.  However, the population of North india did not decline.  They had 17 children, 18 children, and 19 children. The senior DMK leader declared, "They have no other job."

Murugan cautioned people who were disparaging Tamils, citing education minister dharmendra Pradhan's disparaging statement on DMK MPs in Parliament.

"You're referring to us as uncivilized because we come from this foul culture? Your tongue will be severed. The DMK minister advised caution.

Amid a dispute over the 'three-language formula' in the NEP, Union minister Pradhan stated the tamil Nadu government was "dishonest" and accused it of pulling a "U-turn" on the PM SHRI plan for schools earlier this week when speaking in the Lok Sabha.
