The family was forced to live on the streets after his father died suddenly. The reason is that when his father died, he had only 13 rupees in his account, Aalim Hakim said. Thus, he started cutting hair to take care of the family. Aalim Hakim said that he started by charging Rs 20 for the first haircut.

He charged Rs 30 for haircutting and shampooing. Then he slowly installed AC in the hair-cutting shop and charged between Rs 50 and 75.
Then he gradually grew to become the biggest hairdresser in Bollywood. He has also worked as a hairdresser in South indian films including Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu.
