New rules impacting UPI apps like google Pay, PhonePe, and paytm will take effect on april 1, 2025. This is due to the announcement made by the National Payment Corporation of india (NPCI) that bank accounts that have not been used for a considerable amount of time would have their UPI-linked cell numbers deleted. This implies that your bank account will be closed if it is connected to an inactive mobile phone.

Why was this new rule brought into place?
The decision was taken by the NPCI because of the growing number of cybercrime incidents that happen every day. According to an india TV investigation, inactive cellphone numbers ultimately cause technological issues with the banking and UPI systems.

The issue arises if telecom companies transfer these numbers to another individual, thereby creating opportunities for fraudulent activity.
In order to enable UPI transactions, you must have an active mobile phone that is connected to your bank account.

It is essential to get in touch with your telecom provider to find out if the number is still active and in your name if the mobile number that is connected to your account is no longer active or hasn't been recharged in a long time.

If not, you may either update your bank account with a new cellphone number or reactivate it right away. According to the article, the NPCI has also directed banks and UPI applications to update their databases of inactive mobile numbers on a weekly basis.
