An Israeli airstrike killed Hamas political leader Salah al-Bardaweel and his wife in Khan Younis, Gaza.

An Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza's Khan Younis on sunday killed Hamas political leader Salah al-Bardaweel, said the Palestinian militant group.

According to pro-Hamas media, the airstrikes killed Bardaweel, who is a member of the group's political office along with his wife.

On Tuesday, israel resumed significant strikes on Gaza, blaming Hamas while abandoning a ceasefire agreement that began on january 19. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that the main aim of the war is to destroy Hamas as a military and governing entity. He said the new campaign aims to force the group to give up the remaining hostages.

Earlier this week, Hamas announced that several of its top officials including Essam al-Dalis, the head of its government in the Gaza Strip, were killed in a wave of Israeli airstrikes.

The strike targeted Dalis, Mahmud Abu Watfa, the head of the interior ministry, and Bahjat Abu Sultan, the director-general of the internal security service.

“These leaders, along with their families, were martyred after being directly targeted by the Zionist occupation forces’ aircraft,” Hamas said in a statement.

Dalis was a member of Hamas' political bureau in Gaza elected to its leadership in march 2021 and assumed charge of its administration in june of the same year. Previously, israel claimed to have targeted a Hamas facility in november 2023, where Dalis was allegedly present along with other leaders.

According to an AFP report, Abu Watfa was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. The latest attacks mark the most intense Israeli bombardment since a ceasefire was reached in January.
