Shankar's indian 2, starring Kamal Haasan, was a dreadful failure when it was released on July 12 of last year.  The tamil media is currently rife with rumors that lyca productions has chosen not to pursue indian 3, and that the film may never be released because of financial difficulties.

Rumor has it that there are still certain parts of indian 3 that need to be filmed, which will cost a lot of money.  However, it has been rumored that lyca productions has withdrawn from the project due to the massive failure of indian 2.  Additionally, it has been reported that Netflix, which originally acquired the rights to indian 2, is unwilling to support indian 3 and has pulled out of the project.

Netflix might be concerned if they spent a lot of money to purchase the multipart OTT rights.  According to industry insiders, Netflix might not be very worried if they only obtained the OTT rights for indian 2 alone.  Indian 3 appears to be on the verge of being shelved, although it is unclear if this will remain an incomplete project or if another production company will eventually take over to finish the film.
