The idea of interfaith marriages may not be well received in india, a country known for its diversity. The first india Today Gross Domestic Behaviour (GDB) survey found that 61% of respondents were against interfaith marriages. Additionally, 56% of respondents were against intercaste unions.

In india, where several murders have occurred in the sake of family "honor," interfaith and intercaste unions have never been simple.

Not even famous people have been exempt.  In 2024, trolls vented their hatred online on actor Sonakshi Sinha's marriage to Zaheer Iqbal.  Due to their marriage, political activist Fahad Ahmad and actor Swara Bhasker also received hate mail online.  Muslim women who marry Hindu males have also been threatened and attacked.

The GDB study aims to determine India's level of advancement as well as the civic and social attitudes of its citizens, whereas GDP is used to measure economic progress.

The survey's "diversity and discrimination" section had five questions, one of which was, "Should a man and a woman be free to marry each other even if they are from different religions?"

West Bengal, tamil Nadu, and kerala were the top three states for this category.  The states at the bottom of the table were Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

In total, 9,188 respondents from 21 states and one Union Territory were asked 30 thoughtfully chosen questions to determine how the public felt about diversity, discrimination, gender attitudes, public safety, and civic behavior.

With 94% of respondents in favor of interfaith marriages, kerala was found to be the most receptive state, whilst 94% of respondents in karnataka were against them.  For many, however, chandigarh was the true surprise.
