Widespread uproar has been triggered by a video showing an eight-year-old girl rushing from her slum while clutching her books during an anti-encroachment drive in the Jalalpur neighborhood of Ambedkar Nagar. The social media video, which showed an earthmover revving close by, drew harsh criticism from political parties.

Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi party and a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, denounced the demolition and said it was an illustration of the state's declining situation.

He wrote, "Eight years, UP ruined, and only questions remain," on X on Monday.

In what appeared to be an allusion to the Ambedkar nagar demolition, he also posted an AI-generated picture of a girl holding books with a bulldozer in the background.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath gave a press conference on monday to discuss the progress his government has made since taking office eight years ago.

"In Ambedkar nagar, a government official is demolishing people's homes to assert his authority, forcing a young girl to run to save her books," the Samajwadi party chief had written in a previous post one day prior.  "Beti Bachao, Beti Padao" (Save the daughter, educate the daughter) is a statement made by these same bjp officials.

It appears that Yadav was referring to a piece of property in Ambedkar nagar directly across from the destroyed shanties that belonged to a contentious IAS official.

On Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh congress posted the video on X as well.

As the bulldozer destroyed the shanty, a young girl rescued her most valuable belongings: books! It read, "Those in positions of authority who take books from children's hands and the roof over their heads are ashamed of this video."

The Ambedkar nagar Police, meanwhile, justified the demolition.

After the Jalalpur tehsildar's court issued an eviction order (case number T202404040205504), this action was done to clear the village land of encroachment.  Before the non-residential constructions were cleared, several notices were given.  They claimed that the destruction was completed in complete accordance with the revenue court's directive to restore government property.

The district government has reportedly been dealing with the encroachment problem for months, according to purported records.

The sub-divisional magistrate of Jalalpur instructed the tehsildar to make sure that a prior decision was followed in an order dated october 15, 2024.  The eviction of ram Milan from the disputed land (parcel number 888/0.006 hectares) in the village of Arai was ordered on october 10, 2024, following a decision made under Section 67 of the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, 2006.

In addition, the encroacher was fined Rs 800 for execution and Rs 1,980 for compensation.  Officials were given a week to implement the decision by the magistrate's order.
