On an OPT application, even a small error can have serious consequences.  An F1 student's application was denied because her school supplied the wrong graduation date, giving the impression that she applied too soon.  She must now choose between submitting a brand-new OPT application or an I-290B Motion to Reopen.  The I-290B is recommended by the school, however the majority of cases show that motions are typically denied with no accommodations made for students.

If she is still inside the 60-day grace period, she may be able to reapply, but there are hazards involved.  OPT approvals take time to process, thus a delay could affect her ability to start work on schedule.  Losing OPT implies that STEM students will miss out on valuable job prospects.  Years of effort and potential career possibilities shouldn't be lost due to a simple administrative blunder.  More clear protocols are needed in schools to prevent such errors. Right now, the best options depend on how much time she has and whether an appeal has a high likelihood of success.

If your F-1 OPT application was denied due to the incorrect graduation date (August 2024 instead of december 2024), filing Form I-290B (Notice of Appeal or Motion) is the correct step to request a reconsideration of your case.
