A few shows and movies have finally become the buzz of the town and swept the streaming world.  Not all of the stuff that is thrown at us is worth watching.  There are a few exceptions, though.

One such movie is Officer on Duty, an action thriller in malayalam that is presently available for viewing on Netflix and was directed by Jithu Ashraf. The malayalam film industry appears to have figured out how to make compelling crime and thriller movies that make viewers want to watch them again and again.

The technical elements of this movie are impressive, even though the narrative isn't perfect and slows down toward the end.  The picture is elevated to a new level by the background score, which includes Jakes Bejoy's music direction and upbeat EDM tracks during battle scenes.

Despite having a modest budget, the movie has managed to win over viewers.  Ponman, a dark comedy thriller in malayalam that can be found on JioHotstar, is another favorite among fans.  The movie centers on gold dealer Ajesh, who lends gold for a wedding in the village but quickly finds himself in jeopardy as the bride's illegal husband intends to keep the wealth and permanently silence him.

The film masterfully examines human emotions, and its impact is amplified by powerful performances.  Director Hansal Mehta, Shekhar Kapur, and anurag kashyap have praised the Netflix miniseries Adolescence, making it the third must-watch.  Despite only having four episodes, the show's writing, strong acting, and examination of nuanced emotions have had a profound effect on viewers.

The narrative centers on a 13-year-old who is suspected of killing a classmate, leaving his family, therapist, and the lead investigator to try and figure out what actually happened.  The show explores the negative impacts of social media on masculinity and its detrimental influence on teenage boys, going beyond merely being a crime thriller.  These three films and television shows are essential viewing and are some of the best we have seen this year.
