The Avengers: Doomsday cast list has been formally revealed by Marvel Studios in advance of the film's 2026 release.  Kevin Feige, the chairman of Marvel Studios, announced last summer that Avengers 5, formerly known as Avengers: Kang Dynasty, will take a different approach.  Feige revealed a new MCU enemy in the form of Robert Downey Jr.'s doctor Doom following a lackluster reception to the villain Kang and the departure of Kang actor Jonathan Majors.  After that, the title of Avengers 5 was changed to Avengers: Doomsday, but the precise cast of Earth's Mightiest Heroes remained unknown.

Marvel Studios announced the cast of Avengers: Doomsday and confirmed that the film is now in development in a live webcast on websites including X, YouTube, and Instagram.  Filming will continue for at least the next three months, with the release date scheduled for May 1, 2026.

Characters from every stage of the MCU as well as stars from other series were included in the cast announcement for The Avengers: Doomsday.  Given that the Multiverse Saga is the title of the current three MCU phases, 4-6, this makes sense.  Marvel has been experimenting with the universe in both film and television, and Doomsday and Secret Wars, the sixth Avengers film, will both wrap up that plot.

Notably, the announcement featured a number of the stars of Marvel's 2025 releases, including several characters from the upcoming movies Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.  It's unclear if it indicates they'll have significant parts in Avengers: Doomsday or if Marvel is attempting to highlight the significance of these movies.  Naturally, because doctor Doom is primarily a foe for the Fantastic Four, it would make sense for them to play a significant role in Doomsday.  It's less clear why there are so many Thunderbolts* characters.

Another noteworthy addition is Kelsey Grammer, who returned to the role of Beast, also known as Hank McCoy, from the Fox X-Men universe in The Marvels post-credits scene, marking his MCU debut.  This suggests that the X-Men universe will play a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday, as does the amount of other returning original X-Men cast members.  Channing Tatum's character Gambit, who debuted in Deadpool & Wolverine last year, will get her first opportunity to co-star with prominent X-Men figures like professor X and Magneto.

Since The Avengers, a crossover that brought the entire franchise together in 2012, Marvel's Avengers films have always been major events.  With a long and amazing cast list that includes members of the whole MCU and beyond, it is therefore not unexpected that Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be another huge event.  How well any of these characters meshes with the rest of the Avengers: Doomsday cast is still up in the air.

The true test will be how well Marvel manages to bring all these characters together.  One reason why Avengers: Endgame was so successful is that it reduced the size of the cast from Avengers: Infinity war to a much smaller group that was given most of the film's attention.  With a cast as big as Doomsday's seems to be, the MCU may be in for another Infinity war, with several stories that might be both beneficial and detrimental.  The Avengers: Doomsday plot and how it ties the characters together will ultimately determine this.
