The cast announcements for Marvel's most recent movie, Avengers: Doomsday, have gone viral online, but certain significant absences have fans baffled.  Curveballs are nothing new to the MCU brand, but this most recent casting announcement seems to offer more questions than answers.

To begin with, Avengers: Doomsday is billed as a multiverse adventure in which the Avengers will be joined by a combination of X-Men and, rumored, Fantastic Four characters.  Doesn't that seem exciting?  When you consider that Marvel has oddly omitted a few significant players from the lineup, things become a little hazy.  Fan favorites including Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) were conspicuously missing from the cast announcement.  Not to mention the absence of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), who both enjoyed enormous success in their most recent movies.

The surprise omissions have sparked an outcry on social media. Fans are questioning if this could possibly be the full cast. “Definitely can’t be the full cast. No Spider-Man, no Scarlet Witch, no Hulk, no Hawkeye. Surely Marvel wouldn’t miss out on having those characters in there,” said one commenter. Another fan chimed in, “Kind of crazy that Thor is the only remaining member of the original MCU Avengers showing up.” It’s safe to say that the Avengers die-hards are feeling a bit left in the dark.

Nonetheless, a well-known fan theory contends that there is a more profound explanation for these characters' absence; Reddit users have conjectured that their absence is a plot device. The first clue comes from Robert Downey Jr.’s comment on the official announcement post where he says, "That’s what you call a deep bench of talent... actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one... That must be it... right?” To which Marvel Studios responded: “There’s always room for more…”
