Union home minister amit shah emphasized during today's lok sabha debate on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, that immigration is not a standalone problem because it is connected to a number of national issues. He underlined the significance of keeping an eye on who enters the nation's borders from the standpoint of national security, noting that those who might endanger the security of the country will receive special attention.
India is not a "Dharamshala," amit shah said, adding that anyone who pose a threat to national security will not be let in. He further elaborated, "In the last ten years, india has become the fifth-largest economy. india has emerged as a bright spot among the world's largest economies. india has become a hub of manufacturing, and it is natural for people from all over the world to come to India. However, the number of people taking refuge in india for personal gain and making the country unsafe has also increased. Be it Rohingyas or Bangladeshis, if they come to india to create unrest, strict action will be taken against them."
The new Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025: What is it?
The Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 states that foreigners must register when they arrive in India. They will not be allowed to travel, change their name, or remain in protected or restricted locations.
Foreigners who are discovered without a valid passport or visa could be fined Rs 5 lakh or imprisoned for up to 5 years.
A fine of up to Rs 10 lakh and two to seven years in prison await those who use falsified documents to enter, remain, or leave the country.
If a foreign national is caught overstaying, breaking the terms of their visa, or entering prohibited areas, they might face up to three years in prison or a fine of Rs three lakh.
Foreigners must be reported to the registration office by hospitals, nursing homes, universities, and educational institutions.
Transport firms risk fines of up to Rs 5 lakh if they are caught servicing foreigners without proper documentation. Their transport license could be revoked if they don't pay the fine.
Under the measure, the central government will have more power over foreigners, including the ability to control their admission and movement, stop them from leaving, and forbid them from entering prohibited areas.
