Oiling your hair every weekend before washing it becomes a custom for those who grew up in Desi homes. Hair oil formulas for silky, glossy hair have been passed down through the decades. Applying the oil, massaging it into your hair and scalp, and then washing it out an hour or so later is the first step. Did you realize, though, that we have all been doing it incorrectly? According to prominent hairstylist Jawed Habib, such is the case.

Jawed stated that applying oil to damp hair yields the finest results in an interview with Galatta india that was uploaded on YouTube on march 15. Let's hear what he had to say.

'Oil doesn't work on dry hair…'
Jawed stated in hindi in the video, "Yeh aaj tak kabhi kisi ne socha hi nahi hai, sukhe baalon pe tel kaam nahi karta hai."  Baal gile hote hain, jab aap conditioner lagate ho na.  Baal gile hote hain, soap lagate ho.  Lagate ho baal gile hote hain shampoo.  Toh tel lagate hue kyun hote hain baal dry?  (Until today, no one had ever considered the fact that oil doesn't work on dry hair.  The hair is damp when conditioner is applied.  The hair gets wet when soap is applied.  The hair is damp when shampoo is applied.  So why does using oil make our hair dry?

How to apply hair oil?
The hairstylist then went on to outline the procedures one should follow both before and after oiling their hair, emphasizing how crucial it is to apply oil to damp hair.  First, according to Jawed, one should wet their hair with lukewarm water—that is, water that isn't too hot or cold.  Apply oil to your hair once it has been wet.

Mustard oil is the best oil for your hair, according to the hairstylist. Comb or brush your hair once you've finished oiling it. After five minutes of waiting, wash it with any shampoo of your choice. He concluded by saying, "I promise you won't have hair loss if you follow this every day. Your hair will stay healthy for as long as you are alive.
