Recent approval of a fresh H1B extension ought to result in trouble-free travel, right?  One visa holder thought so until they saw conflicting information online, raising the question of whether a new visa stamp would be required before reentering the United States. After returning with the passport and I-797A permission notification, the visitor encountered no problems at immigration. They believe they may have overlooked a crucial step, though, because their visa page still shows the original expiration date.

They are now unsure if they need to get another visa stamp in order to return home at the last minute.  Will it be a problem the next time, given that immigration accepted them without any problems the first time?  Visa laws are complex, especially when online resources give contradictory information.  A visa stamp is usually required for re-entry when returning from international trip, even though an authorized extension allows continued residency in the United States.

In others, though not always, CBP inspectors will take the I-797A for re-entry.  Before making travel plans, it is important to confirm with the U.S. embassy or an immigration attorney.  It is insufficient for people in similar situations to rely just on prior events.  It's always best to be prepared because immigration restrictions change and just because something worked once doesn't indicate it will again.
