You had best follow the regulations if you are an F-1 student in the US, because even a small infraction could wreck your future.  When their temporary work permit was denied because of CPT, an OPT applicant learned this the hard way.  The immigrant student posted on social media that they had misused the 365-day full-time CPT by just one week, leading to the denial of their OPT.  Although they maintain that it was unintentional, the USCIS sees no room for error.

Many students unintentionally surpass the CPT limit and suffer a similar terrible destiny, therefore this is not an unusual instance either. You can make every effort to obtain legal assistance once you cross the border, but you will ultimately be evicted from the United States. people on social media advise starting a new degree program as a way to start over. Others, who were more realistic, suggested that the F-1 student return home and look for further chances there.

Although the student made a grave error, it is alarming that institutions take little to no action to alert pupils.  Colleges freely grant CPT I-20s, but often don't monitor limitations or notify students when the 12-month period is about to expire.  There must be a system in place to remind CPT students on a regular basis.  Until then, remember to keep an eye on your deadlines because even one missed day can jeopardize your chances of getting OPT.
