Imagine submitting an application for a straightforward green card renewal, only to have the four-month processing time abruptly increased to almost four years!  For a permanent US resident who lives in constant fear and uncertainty, that is terrible.  A green card holder recently talked about his experience, saying that when he requested for renewal in october 2024, he was informed that it would take three to four months.  However, the processing period had increased to 43 months when he later verified his status.

The immigrant had intended to go this summer after learning of the initial wait time, but their plans are now in danger of being derailed.  After considering his alternatives, the social media user concluded that he need the $630 I-131 (Advance Parole) form.  Netizens assert that he does not yet require additional documentation, nonetheless.  The USCIS automatically sends out an I-797 receipt notification to prolong the validity of your Green Card for an additional 24 months if you request for renewal before your card expires, which he did.

However, not all airlines or immigration officials are aware of this regulation, thus it does not ensure a hassle-free trip.  Some people suggest having a USCIS field office stamp their passport with an I-551 to prevent issues.  The main problem of this absurdly lengthy renewal period appears to be ignored in the midst of all this confusion. With no one protesting, this has regrettably become the norm.  However, permanent residents' lives are becoming more difficult as a result of these horrifying backlogs at USCIS.
