Kilmer had fought a protracted and difficult fight with throat cancer since 2015, despite reports that he had been battling pneumonia in recent weeks. Several tracheotomies and chemotherapy were performed on him in an attempt to treat the illness, one of which severely damaged his vocal cords. Kilmer's speaking voice became severely reduced, yet he nevertheless appeared in projects and maintained his public profile despite these health issues.
 

His two grown children, Jack and Mercedes Kilmer, whose mother is Joanne Whalley, Kilmer's ex-wife, survive him.  Kilmer's devotion to his family was clear throughout his life, as he managed to combine his love for them with a successful career that reached remarkable heights in Hollywood. Kilmer rose to fame with his breakout role in 1986’s Top Gun, portraying tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. 

Even if his previous work had previously demonstrated promise, this section solidified his reputation as a household name.  He earned praise for his eerily accurate portrayal of the legendary rock star Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991), further solidifying his excellent resume.  After that, he gave a number of well-known roles, such as playing Doc Holliday in the 1993 film Tombstone, which is still a fan favorite, and taking on the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever (1995).  He made a lasting impression in 1995's Heat as a talented crook who challenges the characters played by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
