The march 27 theatrical release of Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan, which was directed by prithviraj Sukumaran, elicited a range of reactions from viewers.  Notwithstanding the reviews, L2: Empuraan has a number of political problems because it includes sequences that are said to offend religious feelings.

With an official announcement anticipated on april 3 or 4, there is now a lot of talk that the L2: Empuraan team intends to begin Part 3, which is tentatively termed L3: Azrael.  In response to political pressure, the film's crew has also trimmed 17 sequences and plans to muffle some of the film's more contentious dialogue.

The malayalam version of L2: Empuraan is still doing well at the box office, despite the fact that the other versions have crashed in many locations due to mixed reviews. It is unclear whether L3: Azrael will become popular in the future, though, as there have been no public updates on this as of yet.

The kerala branch of the bharatiya janata party (BJP) has adopted a measured but unexpected approach to the controversy surrounding the malayalam political thriller L2: Empuraan, which was directed by prithviraj Sukumaran and starred Mohanlal.  This comes as the film has been criticized by the organizer, who is the spokesperson for the RSS, the BJP's ideological parent.  The BJP's tone is especially unexpected considering that the controversy was sparked by a reference to the gujarat riots of 2002, a topic close to the party's heart.
