Critics linked the temporary covering of an LED display on the mosque's minaret that displayed the Islamic phrase to the prime minister's impending visit, which caused controversy. However, after citizens and community leaders protested, authorities took down the tarpaulin in a matter of hours.

Leaders of the Social Democratic party of india (SDPI) and indian National League party (INL) questioned why the mosque's minaret and tower were covered and denounced the deed. According to an article in The New indian Express, A Syed Mohammed, the secretary of the Juma Masjid, clarified that the tarpaulin was put in place to shield the LED board from harm caused by the site's current construction.

Police Clarify
For Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations on march 31, the LED board was erected on the minaret at a height of roughly 50 meters following an order from the Mandapam police Inspector.  The judgment did point out, nevertheless, that the board was installed at such a height without first obtaining permission from the district Collector and the district Superintendent of Police.

The mosque minaret is situated near Pamban West, North, South, and the Coast. According to local accounts, the LED display looks like a lighthouse when viewed from about half a kilometer away, which raises questions about marine navigation and possible dangers for commercial and fishing boats. Authorities recommended that these illuminated signboards be positioned in places that don't obstruct traffic and that official authorization be sought. With mounting scrutiny, the tarpaulin was removed from the minaret, and the matter has now been resolved.
