Although the Thunderbolts* cast has been formally included in Avengers: Doomsday, is this group of heroes known as the "New Avengers" or the "Thunderbolts"? Something is indicated by that asterisk, and the latter looks most likely. Today saw the debut of a new extended television commercial for Thunderbolts*, in which Bucky Barnes sets out to build a reluctant squad composed of characters from Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Black Widow.

In a world without the Avengers, they must band together to fight The Sentry (The Void?).  Given their individual histories, is it possible for them to put aside their disagreements and demonstrate that they are actual heroes?  That appears to have a significant role in the plot of this film.

"I've seen a lot of synopses out there that just say, as though it's a fact, that it's a team assembled by Valentina to go do bad things," Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier explained in a recent interview. "I understand why that would be the assumption, but that is not the story."

"[Yelena Belova is] front and center. Yelena is in a certain place at the beginning of the film, and how she finds her way out of that place, and who she finds herself out of that place with, is at the heart of the story."
