Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said that india is actively negotiating a trade pact with the united states amid the global tariff spat that US President donald trump has sparked. He emphasized that negotiations would not be conducted under duress from outside parties and that India's interests would always come first.

We don't negotiate at guns, as I've stated multiple times.  When asked about the status of the India-US trade agreement, Goyal told reporters, "Time constraints can help drive timely discussions, but it's never wise to rush into decisions that could compromise national and public interests."

One of the netizens commented, "Unnecessarily trying to behave/become like a hero. As if Americans are dying for indian products. india is having trade surplus with US , and charging 100%+ duty on some US goods and still smarting. After 11th July when 90 days pause period is over then justice will be served. "doodh ka doodh panic ka pani"

Another commented, "Always talking nonsense"

His remarks were made the day after President trump declared that all nations would not be subject to reciprocal tariffs, except China, which is currently subject to a 145% charge.  A 90-day exemption has been granted to india, which was earlier anticipated to be impacted by the tariffs.

Goyal claimed that the 'India first' tenet is driving talks between the US and india and that it is consistent with the nation's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

With a long-term objective of more than tripling bilateral commerce from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030, india and the US hope to complete the first phase of their trade agreement by autumn 2025 (September–October).

S jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, also offered commentary on the move, pointing out that india is pursuing trade agreements with the US and the EU quickly.  The trump administration has reacted quickly to India's offers, he continued.

"We reached a conceptual agreement to begin working on a bilateral trade pact within a month of the incoming administration's inauguration. We're looking for a workable solution that takes into account the worries of both parties. "This process isn't open-ended," jaishankar stated.

Regarding the trade agreement between india and the EU, Goyal said that progress is most successful when both sides appreciate one another's demands and concerns.

"All trade discussions are advancing with the spirit of india first and in alignment with our vision for Viksit Bharat 2047," he stated. "However, concrete steps are required to accelerate the conclusion of the free trade agreement."

Jaishankar continued, "In each case, we're urging our counterparts to expedite the process."
