🧠 “It’s Probably Just a Phase…”

That’s what most parents say.
Until the silence grows louder.
Until the routines become rigid.
Until other children move ahead — and yours stays behind.

Autism doesn’t always arrive with a label. But it almost always arrives with signs.
And the earlier we spot them, the more powerful the intervention.

This Autism Awareness Month, IndiaHerald and Pinnacle® bring you the 10 signs every parent must know — especially before your child turns 3.

🚨 1. Doesn’t Respond to Name by 9–12 Months

If your child consistently ignores being called, even when there's no distraction, it's one of the earliest red flags.

🚩 2. Avoids Eye Contact

Babies typically seek eye contact as early as 6 weeks. Lack of eye connection often points to social disengagement.

🧸 3. Doesn’t Point or Wave

Gestures like pointing, waving, or showing toys by 12 months are key communication markers. Their absence may signal a delay.

🔁 4. Repeats Phrases (Echolalia)

Children may repeat what you say without using language meaningfully. This is often observed in autism-related speech delay.

⏳ 5. Has Narrow, Repetitive Interests

Fixation on spinning wheels, lining up toys, or specific routines can indicate restricted behavior patterns.

😫 6. Shows Resistance to Change

If even a small change in routine causes distress or meltdowns, this could be more than personality — it may be sensory or behavioral rigidity.

🛑 7. Doesn’t Imitate or Pretend Play

Most toddlers imitate adults and engage in pretend games by age 2. A lack of this could suggest underdeveloped social imagination.

🗣️ 8. Delayed Speech or No Babbling by 12 Months

One of the strongest early indicators. Especially when combined with lack of gestures or comprehension.

👂 9. Hyper- or Hypo-Sensitivity to Sensory Input

Covers ears at sound? Refuses certain clothes? Doesn’t respond to pain? All signs of Sensory Processing Disorder, commonly present in autism.

👥 10. Doesn’t Seek or Enjoy Peer Interaction

Prefers being alone, doesn’t show interest in group play, or resists being touched by others — especially in toddlers — is a red flag for social delays.
