Woman Marries Against Family's Wishes, Father Dies By Suicide

SIBY JEYYA
Late wednesday night in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, a 49-year-old owner of a medical business who was apparently upset about his daughter "marrying against the family's wishes" committed suicide. Family members discovered the man, Rishiraj alias Sanju Jaiswal, dead in his bedroom after hearing a gunshot at around one in the morning. He was immediately pronounced dead after the bullet struck his temple.

About 15 days ago, Rishiraj's daughter left home with a local young man, according to Additional Superintendent of police Krishna Lalchandani.  Later thereafter, she was located in indore and returned. The daughter claimed to be legally married and to have accompanied her spouse to a later court session.

According to the police, Rishiraj wrote a note on a printout of his daughter's Aadhaar card expressing his emotional grief at her choice to marry against the family's desires.

He allegedly wrote: "Harshita, you did wrong, I am leaving," in the note.  How could I kill my daughter when I could have killed you both?"

The police probe now includes the letter's personal opinions on parental rights and the legal procedures affecting adult children.

"What you did was wrong, daughter... Doesn't the lawyer who gives up a whole family for financial gain also have daughters?  Is he not aware of the suffering a father endures? There is now nothing left in society after the destruction of an entire family.

He also questioned the legal system in the note, writing: "I reiterate: how can the court permit the girl to accompany him (her boyfriend) if a marriage under arya Samaj is invalid? Our entire family has been ruined by this. Nobody was able to relate to my suffering.

"This is a very tragic incident," said Niranjan Sharma, additional superintendent of police. The place has been visited by senior officers. A man from a different community was the spouse of the adult girl.  According to reports, the father has been despondent for a few days. These worries are reflected in the suicide note.

Rishiraj resided close to the Bhairo baba temple and ran Babu Medical Store in the Naka Chandrabadni neighborhood. His wife, son, and daughter survive him. In the days preceding the incident, he seemed disturbed, according to the police.

On Thursday, forensic teams came to the scene to help with the investigation.

Tensions in the neighborhood increased after the tragedy.

The father of the young guy who had married Rishiraj's daughter was allegedly beaten by relatives of the deceased.  According to witnesses, he was pummeled until he passed out after being pulled from his house.  The injured man was taken to a local hospital by bystanders who stepped in.

The suicide and the attack that followed are being looked into by the police, who have filed a case.  Authorities have called for calm in the area and are looking through the deceased's phone for more hints.
