Vishu 2025 - celebration of Malayali New Year!

Vishu, the traditional New Year celebrated in kerala, falls on april 14(today) 2025. It marks the beginning of the malayalam solar calendar, with the first day of the month Medam. Vishu is a deeply spiritual and cultural festival for Malayalis, symbolizing hope, prosperity, and the cyclical nature of life. It is celebrated not only in kerala but also in parts of tamil Nadu (especially by Keralites in border areas), and among Malayali communities around the world.

One of the most cherished customs of Vishu is the viewing of the ‘Vishukkani’, meaning “the first sight”. In the early morning, family members, especially children, wake up to see an arrangement of auspicious items placed before a mirror. The Vishukkani typically includes golden cucumber, raw rice, coconut, betel leaves, metal mirror (valkannadi), a traditional lamp (nilavilakku), yellow kanikonna flowers, and an image or idol of Lord Krishna. It is believed that seeing this divine setup first thing in the morning ensures good fortune for the year ahead.

Vishu is also known for its generosity and celebration of abundance. Elders gift money, known as Vishukkaineettam, to younger members of the family as a blessing. people dress in new clothes, visit temples, and spend the day enjoying time with loved ones. Homes are beautifully decorated, and fireworks are often part of the nighttime celebrations, especially in villages.

No Vishu is complete without the grand traditional feast known as ‘Vishu Sadhya’. This vegetarian meal is served on banana leaves and includes multiple kerala delicacies like avial, sambar, thoran, kalan, payasam, and more. Vishu is not just the start of a calendar year—it’s a spiritual reset, an affirmation of faith, and a joyous celebration of life and tradition in every Malayali household.
