An average of 13,000 passenger trains are run daily by the indian Railways, the fourth-largest railway network in the world, serving millions of passengers nationwide. However, because so many people in the nation commute by national transit, especially during the holidays, it is difficult to reserve a seat on indian Railways, even with the large number of trains.

However, whenever you make an unconfirmed reservation, you might have seen phrases like WL, PQWL, GNWL, and RSWL displayed on your ticket.  These show the status of your reservation and establish whether or not a passenger is guaranteed a seat on a train.  Let's examine the meaning and significance of these terms:

Waiting List, or WL: This indicates that your ticket has not been confirmed and that you are on the waiting list.  You won't be able to get a seat in this case unless someone cancels their confirmed ticket and a seat becomes available.

The General Waiting List (GNWL), sometimes known as the most popular and highest priority waiting list, is applicable to tickets purchased at the beginning station or any other significant nearby station.  When compared to other waiting list reservations, GNWL tickets have the best likelihood of being confirmed.

The Pooled Quota Waiting List, or PQWL, is for a pooled quota of tickets among a number of smaller stations or a particular route and has a lesser chance of confirmation.

RSWL or Remote Location Waiting List: The RSWL is unconfirmed bookings for smaller stations that serve as important halts along a major route. This waiting list often has a lower confirmation chance.

Other key details on your ticket
The coach number (e.g., S3, B1) and seat or berth details (including LB (Lower Berth), MB (Middle Berth - in Sleeper class), UB (Upper Berth), SL (Side Lower), and SU (Side Upper)) are additional crucial details on your train ticket in addition to the booking status.

It is important to remember that the reservation chart is finalized around four hours before departure, and, contingent on certain situations, waiting list reservations may be verified in the final passenger list.

Notably, indian Railways offers travelers discounted train tickets.  According to Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, train tickets are offered at a 46 percent discount, and the national carrier provides an astounding Rs 56,993 crore in total subsidies to all passenger categories annually.
