According to government sources, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has risen to the top of the central government's legislative agenda as a result of the Waqf Bill's cross-party support in Parliament.

With the support of partners like the telugu desam party and the Janata Dal (United), the bjp has been able to hold onto power despite not obtaining a full majority in the most recent lok sabha elections. To maintain coalition cohesion, the government had initially shied away from contentious matters. But the congress PARTY' target='_blank' title='ysr congress-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>ysr congress party and Biju Janata Dal have unexpectedly endorsed the Waqf Bill, giving the Center the confidence to push the UCC.

Political Calculations In tamil Nadu
The bjp is siding with the AIADMK in tamil Nadu, where elections are scheduled for next year, and putting aside divisive issues like language policy and delimitation that the party feels could help the rival DMK.

"UCC is a secular civil code," according to Modi.

In a speech to the UCC on april 14 in Haryana, prime minister Narendra Modi criticized the congress for allegedly delaying constitutional reforms.

"Whenever the congress faced a political crisis, they undermined the Constitution," added Modi.  "A uniform civil code, or what I refer to as a secular civil code, is required by the spirit of the Constitution for everyone.  Congress was never willing to put it into effect.

He emphasized how the UCC was implemented in uttarakhand during the bjp administration, asserting that the law guarantees equal rights and does not single out any particular population.

New Law Commission to finalize UCC draft
Nearly 10 million people and 30 organizations provided feedback on a preliminary UCC draft that was made public by the 22nd Law Commission, which was chaired by retired Justice Rituraj Awasthi.  But before the draft was finalized, its term ended.

The 23rd Law Commission is now operational again.  The government published a notice for its formation on september 2, 2024. Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, who retired from the supreme court in May 2023, is scheduled to take over as chairman seven months later.

Professor D.P. Verma and advocate hitesh Jain will be full-time members.  We anticipate notifying them of their appointments this week.
