Justice BR Gavai will be the next Chief Justice, CJI Khanna sent a recommendation to the Law Ministry.


Justice BR Gavai: Justice BR Gavai will remain CJI for 6 months after assuming office and will retire in november 2025. He will be the second Chief Justice from the country belonging to Scheduled Caste.

Justice BR Gavai: Chief Justice of india Sanjiv Khanna on Wednesday (16 april 2025recommended the Union Law Ministry to appoint Justice BR Gavai as the next CJI. He will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of the country on 14 May 2025. Current CJI Sanjiv Khanna will retire on 13 May. BR Gavai will be the second Chief Justice to come from Scheduled Caste, before him CJI KG Balakrishnan was also from Scheduled Caste.


BR Gavai's tenure will be 6 months

Justice BR Gavai will remain CJI for 6 months after assuming office and will retire in november 2025. Justice BR Gavai is from Amravati, Maharashtra. He started working as a lawyer in the year 1985. Then he used to work with Barrister raja Bhosale, former Advocate General of maharashtra and later a judge of Maharashtra High Court. BR Gavai practiced law in bombay high court from 1987 to 1990.


Raised questions on bulldozer action

BR Gavai was appointed Assistant Pleader and Assistant Public Prosecutor of the maharashtra Government in the nagpur Bench of bombay high court in the year 1992. He became an Additional Judge of the high court in the year 2003. BR Gavai came to the supreme court in the year 2019 and is now going to become CJI. Last year BR Gavai had raised questions on bulldozer action.


Justice BR Gavai said on monday (14 april 2025) on the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar that the nation will always be grateful to him for the creation of the Constitution. Speaking at the supreme court premises, Justice Gavai said, "The nation will always be grateful to Dr Ambedkar because he and his colleagues drafted the Constitution. India is strongprogressingand is one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. It is his philosophy, ideology, and vision that keeps us united and strong."
