One by one, six employees of a hospital in Massachusetts who worked on the same floor inexplicably developed brain tumors. The local media outlet WBZ was the first to report on the tumor instances at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in early April. The hospital says there is no 'environmental danger' associated with the instances, and it began an investigation in december of last year.

The impacted nurses are employed at the hospital's fifth-floor maternity section. The Department of Occupational health and Safety (OHS) at Newton-Wellesley's parent system, mass General Brigham, announced the sixth case. When five cases of benign brain tumors began to surface among the nurses, the investigation got underway.  According to the Boston Herald, OHS wrote a letter to patients and their families informing them about the sixth case.

Ellen Moloney, president and COO of mass General Brigham/Newton-Wellesley Hospital, wrote, "OHS has identified six staff members who have worked for varying durations on the fifth floor and report developing benign (non-cancerous) brain tumors," the Herald said.

The Massachusetts Nurses Association is currently investigating the issue in an effort to determine the potential cause of large tumors.

The OHS claims that it has not yet discovered a common connection between the tumors. "We have found no evidence that these medical conditions were caused by the work environment, and the OHS investigation is still ongoing," the letter said. Carcinogenic toxins in the environment can cause tumours. Notably, carcinogenic toxins can often accumulate in a single source accessed by different people and cause brain tumours.

The personnel at the hospital believes otherwise, despite the fact that hospital authorities have not discovered a common cause. They believe that the element that is currently unknown is probably responsible for not only these tumors but possibly other ailments that affect employees.

The Massachusetts Nurse Association informed the Herald that it will keep looking into the issue to determine the tumors' underlying cause. It further stated that there appears to be a problem at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and that the hospital's study was incomplete.

The investigation will go on until the end of the month, at which point the union will release its conclusions.
