In india, divorce rates are on the rise these days; hitherto taboo, the practice is now gradually gaining acceptance in several regions of the nation. Although many view this change as a sign of increased self-reliance and awareness of one's own rights, a recent viral video sparked a heated debate regarding whether or not some people today abuse divorce laws for their own gain.

Woman in Viral Clip Talks Openly About Using Divorce to Gain Money
A video has received a lot of attention and criticism after going viral on X (previously Twitter).  The video shows a woman being casually asked by an interviewer what the most poisonous thing she has ever done was.  The woman answers without hesitation, "Take them (husbands) to court and then get a good divorce lawyer, of course," after claiming to have been separated four times.  Half of the retirement should be spent with him.  Take half of what they own.  After that, battle them for increased child support.

She continues by explaining her strategy, "And, a couple of years from now, hit you up for more child support. Every three years, you go up from maybe USD 200 (around INR 17,000) and go up to USD 2,000 (INR 1.70 lakh) per child."

Online Reactions Reflect Widespread Concern
When the movie was uploaded on the internet, it went viral right after, receiving over 6.8 lakh views on X.  "Trend catching up really well in india too," the caption said, implying that comparable instances of divorcing someone for financial gain are growing increasingly frequent in the nation.

As anticipated, the video elicited a flurry of intense responses from indian social media users.  The woman's remarks caused a lot of individuals to express worry and even rage.

One user wrote, "Indian women are more evil than that woman." Another commented, "This is why marriage is so scary. All they are doing is adopting Western culture and making life miserable for the person and his loved ones."

There were others who echoed similar sentiments, calling the mindset dangerous. "Marriage is becoming scary due to this kind of mentality," a user remarked, while another added, "Due to such people, people will stop marrying soon; this is really concerning."

More indians Choosing Divorce, Especially in Rural Areas
The viral video has refocused attention on the growing number of divorces in India.  Divorce rates among indians have increased over the past seven years, according to a recent Moneycontrol analysis based on data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey.  Furthermore, although the growth in metropolitan areas was anticipated, the increasing rate of separation in rural areas was particularly noteworthy.

The proportion of divorced or separated women has increased in rural India.  During the same time period, divorce rates for women and men in cities climbed from 0.6% to 0.7% and 0.3% to 0.5%, respectively.  Contributing causes, according to experts, include shifting attitudes, improved education, financial independence, and a decrease in social shame.  Videos like the one that is currently trending, however, also raise questions about whether divorce laws intended to safeguard women are being abused by some.

A Growing Social Debate
Even though a lot of people feel sorry for women who are actually victims in troubled marriages, this popular video has opened up a discussion on how far the system can be pushed until it backfires.

In order to guarantee that justice is administered fairly and that no one takes advantage of the law for personal gain, several internet users have proposed that divorce rules be stricter and subject to greater scrutiny.

Given the rising divorce rate in indian society, the line separating pursuing justice from manipulating the system is still likely the most delicate and hotly contested topic ever.  "No end in sight is imminent."
