I'm rather certain that most of you, if not all of you reading this review, have never heard of the film "Ne Zha," much less that a sequel has recently been released in theaters across the United States. In september 2019, I developed an unexpected fandom for "Ne Zha." I was watching another movie, although I can't recall which one it was, when I noticed a huge IMAX banner for "Ne Zha," an animated film I had never heard of. It was promoted in IMAX 3D, and because I'm a huge fan of the movie, I wanted to see it.

I didn't see any kind of trailer or anything.  I could only rely on the poster, and then  After seeing it through to the end, I left the theater a new admirer of the movie.  The tale was captivating, the comedy was funny, the animation was excellent, and it was really heartfelt.  And now, a little more than five years later, we have "Ne Zha 2," the sequel that I have been looking forward to.  How is this new sequel coming along?

For background, the film is based on Chinese tradition and tells the story of Nezha, a boy who was unintentionally conceived from the Demon Pill, a source of demon energy that was separated from the Spirit Pearl and combined to become the Chaos Pearl.  Despite everything being against him, Nezha tries to resist his fate and work toward becoming the hero rather than a monster. He is feared and despised by everyone because of his wild antics, with the exception of his parents, mentor, and new buddy Ao Bing.  It is essential to watch the first movie before watching the sequel because it picks up virtually exactly where the first one ends.

I was already a fan coming into this second movie, as I previously stated.  I also dressed myself as my own interpretation of the main character, which received a lot of praise.  Furthermore, I genuinely think that "Ne Zha 2" is superior to "Ne Zha 1."  The plot of the original movie was greatly extended in this follow-up, which also gave the whole affair an even greater sense of grandeur and epic scope.  They even added more intriguing character development to several of the characters that were reprised from the original film.  It was an absolutely amazing sight.

Speaking of amazing visuals, "Ne Zha 2" features much better animation than the original.  The animation in "Ne Zha 1" wasn't particularly poor.  Although the first movie's animation was indeed rather nice, the animators significantly enhanced it over the next five years.  In addition to the backgrounds and set pieces, the movie included a lot of vivid colors and details on the characters, who appear to be much more sophisticated than in the first movie.  It truly makes me wish I could have seen this sequel in an IMAX theater, which was sadly only open for one day when I opted for the 4DX experience. Additionally, this sequel offers heart, just like the original film did.  In fact, I was crying while watching this movie, and I knew I wasn't alone.  The sniffles reverberated throughout my auditorium.

Overall, it's clear that the film's creators were passionate about the tale they were presenting.  With "Ne Zha 2," they went above and beyond to produce something truly unique, and I can state with confidence that they have achieved enormous success.  I've already seen the film twice by the time I'm writing this review.  I think that's how good it is.  I can tell that I was never bored while viewing this film, which is around two hours and twenty-three minutes long—a little more than thirty minutes longer than the first one.

I don't want to overhype anything, but I firmly think that this film is deserving of all the accolades, attention, and box office receipts it is receiving.

Overall, A MASTERPIECE!
