"Until Dawn" is a David F. Sandberg film that begins with a group of friends traveling to a rural valley in search of a missing girl.  Melanie (Maia Mitchell), the sister of the main character Clover (Ella Rubin), is the girl in issue.  The friend group has all the various personality kinds, just like the game version.  After being stalked by a masked assailant, Clover and his companions awaken to discover that they are in the early hours of the same night.  They are compelled to repeatedly relive the terrible night.

At 103 minutes, "Until Dawn" doesn't let the audience wait long for the horror to begin.  The psychiatrist Hill (Peter Stormare), however, is one of the few aspects of the original game that are still there in the movie.  Wendigo, the evil cannibalistic ghost, and the fact that the group must live till daylight in order to get out of the nightmare.  Many fans would compare the "restarts" to truly starting anew in order to experiment with the various options that the game's butterfly effect might present.

Some of the film's moments, like the one when the kids have to hide from the masked attacker, are evocative of old-school horror game techniques that require players to make snap judgments.  The movie "Until Dawn" parodies the horror clichés, just like the original game did.  It still lacks the twists and "magic" that the PS4 game offers, though.   As retaliation for his sisters' alleged murders, Josh, played by Rami Malek in the game, turns out to be the major bad who chose to carry out a very well-planned prank.  The Wendingos and miners are also expertly woven into the plot of the game, which was subsequently remade for the PS5.

Despite its wildness and humor, the movie never forgets that there is a mystery to be solved. Ironically, when it tries to make sense of itself, it loses the ridiculousness that makes it so fascinating.   Although Peter Stormare's entrance into the story as a hammy villain is never a bad thing, and Rubin gives Clover enough personality and wit that we do want her to solve Melanie's disappearance, Dawn doesn't really get off to a strong start with its unexpected set pieces, which makes its ending feel all the more conventional.

Overall, Until Dawn serves up enough to satisfy the audience!
