Thunderbolts* will bring together some of the most unexpected friends, including Taskmaster, Yelena Belova, red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, and john Walker's U.S. Agent.  Together, they will attempt to thwart The Sentry/Void's latest danger in New York City.  But based on early responses to Thunderbolts*, I'm particularly thrilled about Yelena Belova, a member of the new MCU team.

Most, if not all, of the early comments to Thunderbolts* have emphasized Florence Pugh's portrayal of Yelena Belova, as evidenced by several social media posts about the film.  In addition to being a significant fan favorite alongside Sentry, played by Lewis Pullman, Yelena is credited for bearing the most of the movie's most emotional sequences.  With a really amazing performance, Pugh is also hailed as the new MCU film's MVP.

Yelena Belova, the younger sister of Scarlett Johansson's natasha Romanov and a previous Widow trained in the red Room, made her debut in 2021's Black Widow.  In Avengers: Endgame, Yelena attempted to get revenge on Clint Barton for her sister's death, and she also appeared in the Hawkeye series that year.  However, based on the initial responses to the film, it's great to see how well-liked Yelena is because Thunderbolts* is her first genuine chance to play a major role in the MCU.

Why I'm Glad Marvel Is Embracing Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova Star Emoji | Meaning, Copy And Paste
Overall, Yelena Belova is one of the best characters in the MCU right now.  Yelena was a breakout star and one of the best parts of the Black Widow film. She was also a fan favorite when she made an appearance in Hawkeye, contributing some of the best scenes, both dramatically when she finally faced Clint Barton to have her reckoning over Natasha's death in Hawkeye's finale and comedically with Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop.  She is possibly the best new character in the MCU since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Florence Pugh's consistently excellent portrayal of the former Black Widow—who is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's top performers today—is a major factor in Yelena's success.  I'm therefore delighted to see that Marvel Studios is recognizing Pugh's abilities.  Similarly, Yelena's popularity among fans in the next MCU film is encouraging for the franchise's prospects outside of Thunderbolts*.
